PLACE was hired by client YS Development to design this 1500 sf remodel and addition to a pacific northwest modern classic by Ralph Anderson, originally built in the mid 1960s. The trick here was a sensitive matter of balancing old with new--carefully taking stock of what's existing and respectfully integrating new elements that add improved efficiency and program and adhere to the same language of detail, material and tone, without forcing them to precisely "match" an existing aesthetic. Generous use will be made of natural, sustainably-harvested and reclaimed materials throughout, with an emphasis on lots of natural light and views of the densely-forested site.
